Citronella-Öl wird aus den Blättern und Stängeln der Cymbopogon-Pflanzenart, insbesondere Cymbopogon Winteranius, dampfdestilliert. Citronella-Öl ist als pflanzliches Insektenschutzmittel, ein Biopestizid mit ungiftiger Wirkungsweise, bekannt und seit 1948 in den USA für diese Verwendung zugelassen. Die Hauptproduktionsländer dieses Öls sind Indonesien und China zusammen machen sie etwa 40 % des weltweiten ätherischen Citronellaöls aus.

Dieses Öl eignet sich nicht nur als Insektenschutzmittel für die Haut, sondern hilft auch gegen übermäßiges Schwitzen, fettige Haut und Haare und wirkt als Deodorant. Es soll Schmerzen bei Rheuma und Arthritis lindern und Grippe, Erkältungen und leichten Infektionen vorbeugen. Das Öl ist gut für das Verdauungssystem, um Kolitis und Darminfektionen zu heilen und Darmparasiten loszuwerden. Es lindert Menstruationsbeschwerden und Schmerzen und beschleunigt den Herzschlag. In einem Verdampfer verwendet, lindert es bekanntermaßen Müdigkeit, Kopfschmerzen und Neuralgien und sorgt für eine fröhliche und optimistische Stimmung. Vermeiden Sie die Anwendung während der Schwangerschaft und bei Kindern unter 3 Jahren. Nicht innerlich einnehmen.

Alte Kulturen in Indien, Ägypten und anderswo, wo die Gräserart Cymbopogon wuchs, nutzten sie, um Insekten, insbesondere Mücken, abzuwehren. Damals ließen sich die Menschen in der Nähe von Flüssen und Gewässern nieder. Während dies in vielerlei Hinsicht eine gute Sache war, bedeutete es auch eine Fülle von Insekten und Mücken, die Krankheiten brachten und Menschen töteten.
